Great and Beautiful Character

One of the most sentimental activities we participated in while visiting Ghana was a naming ceremony. This took place at one of the local villages among our new family members who welcomed us in with open arms. They were kind, hospitable, and happy to have us there.

We enjoyed a traditional presentation of African drumming, dancing, and cultural activities. The performers were lively, passionate, and excited to teach and share customs and traditions. It was amazing to have the entire village come and join in on the celebration in a “family reunion” style atmosphere.

During the name ceremony, we were introduced to the elders. One of whom was the Queen Mother of the village who is absolutely beautiful at 115 years old.

They called us up one-by-one and introduced us to the family. They shared the day of the week that we were born which also represents the first part of our name. I was born on Wednesday which is Ekua. The second part of our name represents your spirit and personality. I was given the name Nyarkowaa which means Beautiful Character. On Saturday, July 27, 2019, I was introduced to my African village and family as Ekua Nyarkowaa. My husband was introduced as Kofi Obrimpong which means Great! I truly believe these names captures the essence of who we are and who we strive to be.

Afterwards, we were greeted and hugged by our family in a celebration style party. We learned African dance routines and took a family portrait. I mostly enjoyed meeting the children who were so eager and excited to have us. As a token of love and appreciation, I gifted the children with books to share, read, and enjoy.

This experience further connected me to Ghana and reaffirmed the work God put in me to do. We always here “it takes a village” and this moment solidified that expression in mote ways than one. I’m forever thankful to our village.

Until next time,

Xoxo
